I've passed the mid point of summer and things are speeding up. I made a commitment to serious comic making at the same time I made a commitment to having as much fun with my wife and sons as I could this summer.
That means most days I'm up at 5-6, and after a great breakfast and some serious playtime with the oldest, it's off to comic-making-land for the rest of the morning. Afternoons are for swimming, and running, and anthills, and swinging and sliding and being the dinosaur. Evenings, are storybooks and making dinner and bath-times and bedtimes.
Being a dad has made me work harder at the things I love, to prioritize and shake off so much of the muddy nonsense that clings to the creative world. I just don't have time for bad attitudes and psychic leeches and shifty ne'er-do-wells. It's move forward or get out of the way, folks, dedicated people are coming through...
This September I've been invited to join the multi-talented Kal Barteski in a wine-show-art-show pairings event that gives me a chance to get some not-really-for-comics work out of the studio. Kal and I are experimenting with some visual dialog for the event, so expect some unique results. The more I see of Kal's work the more I wish I could brush letter my new secret project. I may have to ask her to do it.
September is also kids book fishing fun event at Fort Whtye with John Toone the author of our two kids books Catch That Catfish and Hope and the Walleye. We're going to read some stories do some art and go fishing in the sunshine. I love doing kids events.
October will see the launch of the third and final volume of The Imagination Manifesto my not-for-kids hardcover graphic album serial. This is the one folks. Everything comes together. Then it's off to the Central Canada Comic Con, which always proves to be a great time. The support of The Imagination Manifesto there surprises and humbles me. This year we will have 200 special ink-art hand-stamped signed and numbered C4 Exclusive editions of the first volume only available at the convention with a share proceeds helping to support Kids Help Phone.
I'm also proud to say that I'll be working the veteran comicer Lovern Kindzierski on a hundred plus page graphic novel for the next many months for Renegade Arts. It's set in winnipeg, and dances to the tune of Homer's Odyssey and is dark dark dark....
Writing and illustration have been very good to me lately, and I'll do my best to return the favour.
Pow!
What's this? A skull wearing a hat of course.
